Sarah Leah Chase, who owned specialty food shop Que Sera Sarah and did catering on Nantucket, has several wonderful cookbooks, two of which are mainstays of my large collection: The Nantucket Open House Cookbook and Cold-Weather Cooking. While the cookbooks are more than 20 years old, you’d never know it flipping through the pages. Nothing jumps out as dated. I can’t wait to get my hands on her newest, New England Open-House Cookbook.
A number of my favorite recipes come from her cookbooks:
Cold-Weather Cooking:
Saucisson Paysanne (French country sausage), popular appetizer that is also great over hearty noodles. Wonderful sauce of reduced wine, brown sugar dijon and Calvados.
Baby Carrots with Brown Sugar and Mustard (everyone loves these)
Chutney Cream Cheese (amazing with pita triangles)
Orzo and Roasted Vegetable Salad
Mixed Greens with Spiced Pecans, Chevre and Hot Cider Dressing
Bay Scallops Gremolata (a wonderful and delicate hash)
Nantucket Open-House Cookbook:
Marinated Goat Cheeses
Summer Vegetable Couscous
Ham, Cheese, Mushroom and Walnut Salad
Orange Shortbread (a Christmas favorite)
Tri-Berry Muffins
Honey-Herb Rolls
